Barbara Wear Nutting

May 27, 1928 - March 04, 2026

Barbara Wear Nutting

Barbara Wear Nutting, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on March 4, 2026, surrounded by love and family. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 27, 1928, to Doris Baker Wear and Rayburn L. Wear.

Barbara spent her early years in Pensacola, Florida, where she graduated from high school in 1945. She went on to attend Judson College in Marion, Alabama, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1949. A gifted scholar, she was also honored as an Academic Who’s Who in America. Following graduation, she began her teaching career at the Pape School in Savannah, Georgia, where she taught 4th grade and ultimately became the school’s last living faculty member.

On August 16, 1952, Barbara married the love of her life, Sidney T. Nutting, Jr., of Savannah. Together they raised two sons and built a life centered around family, faith, service, and deep community friendships.

Barbara lived in many places throughout her life—including Savannah, GA; Montgomery, AL; Franklin, VA; and Mountain Lakes, NJ—before she and Sidney returned to Savannah to make their home at The Landings on Skidaway Island. After Sidney’s passing sixteen years ago, Barbara became a cherished resident of The Marshes of Skidaway Island, where she warmly welcomed family and friends.

A devoted Episcopalian, Barbara was active in congregations at St. John’s Episcopal Churches in Savannah and Montgomery, and Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Franklin, Virginia. She served faithfully for many years as Treasurer of the Women of the Church. She also enjoyed serving as a guide for the historic Green-Meldrim House and contributing to the annual church bazaar. Barbara was a dedicated supporter of her husband’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the Royce Learning Center in Savannah.

Barbara was a proud member of Chapter S, P.E.O., and she cherished the friendships and shared purpose found within that sisterhood.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Sidney Thomas Nutting III and his wife, Alison Hietbrink Nutting; William Rayburn Nutting and his wife, Ann Harbin Leisy Nutting; her sister‑in‑law, Bonney Nutting Gilbreath, and her husband, Joseph Earl Gilbreath, Jr.; her niece, Mary Gilbreath Pope (Hugh Pope); and her nephew, Joel Gilbreath. She is also survived by three granddaughters who brought her immense pride and joy: Anna Marie Nutting, Lauren Elizabeth Nutting Hockett (Gage Hockett), and Katherine Anne Nutting.

Barbara will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her steadfast faith, her sharp mind, and the warmth she extended to all who knew her. Her legacy of love, grace, and quiet strength lives on in her family and in the many lives she touched.

Funeral: 11:30 a.m., Friday, March 13, 2026, at St. John’s Episcopal Church (325 Bull Street, on Madison Square, Savannah), conducted by The Reverend Gavin G. Dunbar.  A reception will follow the service at the Green-Meldrim House.

Burial: Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. John’s Episcopal Church or The Royce School, Savannah, are appreciated.
